The Other (Same) Apartment is the result of an intense need to create. I wanted to write a screenplay that deserved to be told, and of all the ideas that came to mind, I settled on a love story between a man and a woman from different eras. It was an appealing premise, but the more drafts I wrote, the more disconnected I felt from the characters and their transformation. It wasn't until I decided to draw directly from my own experience that everything fell into place.

At the time, I was in the process of discovering my own identity and embracing who I truly am. The screenplay quickly evolved into a reflection of my greatest fears. Making it a gay coming-of-age story felt appropriate. At first glance, it can be mistaken for a romance, but there is more to it than that. Both Alfonso and Gonzalo are finding the courage to face a world that struggles to understand them. Alfonso suppresses his true self and pretends it doesn't exist, while Gonzalo wants to shout it out but feels forced to repress it. They live convinced that the only way to lead a peaceful life is to keep hiding. Although they don't know it at first, their differences will bring them together and force them to confront their greatest fears, even though they are not meant to end up together. And that is my favorite part of the film. It shows us that love has many kinds of happy endings, and that you need to appreciate yourself in order to find true happiness.

I can't help but laugh a little whenever I watch this film because, at the time, I didn't realize that we were working on a message I needed to hear more than ever. A message that I hope reaches other people struggling not only with their sexuality but also with living an authentic life, so that, like our characters, they too can step out of their apartments and live proudly as who they are.
